Biography

 

Dr. Md. Torequl Islam (Ph.D.) is an academic and researcher in pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, and drug discovery, currently serving as the Chairman and Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy at Gopalganj Science and Technology University (GSTU), Bangladesh. He is also the Founder and Director of BioLuster Research Center Ltd., a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing research and education in Bangladesh and globally.

 

Dr. Islam earned his Doctorate in Biotechnology from the Federal University of Piaui, Brazil, where he specialized in oxidative stress, toxicology, nanotechnology, and risk assessment, with a focus on nanoemulsion-based toxicogenic studies. He previously completed his M. Pharm. at Southern University Bangladesh and his B. Pharm. at Khulna University, both with outstanding academic achievements. His educational journey was rooted in a strong science foundation from his Higher Secondary and Secondary studies.

 

He has broad teaching and research experience, beginning as a Lecturer at Southern University Bangladesh (2008–2014), and later progressing through academic ranks at GSTU as Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and currently Chairman. His international experience includes a Postdoctoral Fellowship (PNPD/CAPES, Brazil, 2017–2018) on nanotoxicogenetic studies of citrinin and a Part-time Researcher role at Ton Duc Thang University, Vietnam (2018–2021), where he contributed to laboratory-based projects, scientific publications, and patents. He also served as a UGC Postdoctoral Fellow (2024–2025) at Khulna University, working on neurobiological prospection of natural compounds through GABAergic interaction.

 

Beyond his academic roles, Dr. Islam is actively engaged in global research and education networks, including as a Research Consultant and Educational Member of the Noble Global Community Educational Program (NGCEP), Australia, supporting young Ph.D. candidates in biomedical and health sciences. He has contributed to institutional development at GSTU as Assistant Proctor and as a Member of the Teachers’ Association.

 

Dr. Islam’s research expertise spans oxidative stress, toxicology, nanotechnology, pharmacology, neurobiology, and drug discovery from natural compounds, with numerous scientific publications to his credit. His career reflects a dedication to advancing pharmaceutical research, mentoring future scientists, and promoting global collaboration in education and health sciences.

 

Education

Doctorate (Ph.D.)

Dr. Islam was awarded a Doctorate in Biotechnology on 17 February 2017 (certified on 4 October 2017) from the Postgraduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Federal University of Piaui, Teresina, Brazil. His doctoral research focused on oxidative stress, toxicity, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, mutagenicity, toxicology, and risk assessment. He acquired advanced expertise in the preparation and characterization of nanoemulsions, and his project titled “Non-clinical toxicogenic prospection of phytol and its nanoemulsion” significantly contributed to the field of toxicology and pharmaceutical biotechnology.

 

Master of Pharmacy (M. Pharm.)

In 2011 (certified on 23 June 2014), Dr. Islam completed his Master of Pharmacy (M. Pharm.) from Southern University Bangladesh, Chattogram, with an outstanding CGPA of 3.82 out of 4.0. His coursework emphasized pharmaceutical formulation, manufacturing and industrial management, biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics, pharmaceutical analysis, pharmacology, quality control, medicinal chemistry, drug discovery, clinical pharmacy, and toxicology. His thesis was entitled “Phytochemical and pharmacological investigations of Uraria lagopodies DC and Urena lobata L.”

 

Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm.)

Dr. Islam earned his Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm.) degree from Khulna University, Bangladesh (2003–2007), certified in 2010, with a First Class (equivalent to CGPA 4.0 on a 4.0 scale). His undergraduate studies covered pharmacognosy, pharmaceutical analysis, chemistry, pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, and toxicology. For his project, he worked on the phytochemical and pharmacological evaluation of ethanolic crude extract of Mangifera indica L. bark.

 

Higher Secondary Certificate (H.S.C.)

In 2002, Dr. Islam successfully completed his Higher Secondary Certificate (H.S.C.) from Shahid Mashiur Rahman Degree College, Jhikargacha, achieving First Class with a focus on physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics.

 

Secondary School Certificate (S.S.C.)

Dr. Islam obtained his Secondary School Certificate (S.S.C.) in 2000 from Raghunath Nagar Secondary School, also in First Class. His subjects included physics, chemistry, biology, higher mathematics, and social science, providing him with a strong foundation for his future studies in pharmaceutical sciences.

 

Work Experience

Dr. Islam is currently serving as the Chairman of the Department of Pharmacy at Gopalganj Science and Technology University (GSTU), Bangladesh (since April 2025), where he is responsible for top-level departmental management, teaching, and research. In parallel, since August 2024, he has been the Founder and Director of BioLuster Research Center Ltd., a non-profit initiative dedicated to advanced research and knowledge dissemination in Bangladesh and beyond.

He was appointed as a Postdoctoral Fellow (UGC Bangladesh, 2024–2025) at the Pharmacy Discipline, Khulna University, where he worked on the project “Neurobiological prospection of natural compounds: Evaluation of GABAergic interaction through in vitro, in vivo, and in silico studies.” This fellowship involved study design, experimental research, publishing scientific papers, and mentoring young researchers.

 

Since October 2023, Dr. Islam has been serving as an Associate Professor at GSTU, where he teaches undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy courses, supervises research projects, and takes part in administrative duties. Earlier, he worked as an Assistant Professor (2019–2023) and Lecturer (2018) in the same department, gaining extensive teaching and research experience. His academic career began as a Lecturer at Southern University Bangladesh (2008–2014), where he taught various pharmacy courses and guided undergraduate research projects.

 

Internationally, Dr. Islam completed a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (2017–2018) at the Federal University of Piaui, Brazil, focusing on toxicogenic and nanotoxicogenetic prospections of citrinin, with neuroprotective and antitumor studies in mice. This project included nanoemulsion preparation, tumor induction, and toxicological profiling using yeast mutants, plant systems, cell lines, and animal models. Additionally, he worked as a Part-time Researcher (2018–2021) at Ton Duc Thang University, Vietnam, collaborating on laboratory-based projects, publications, and patents in pharmaceutical sciences.

Since 2018, Dr. Islam has also been engaged as a Research Consultant and Educational Member with the Noble Global Community Educational Program (NGCEP), Australia, where he provides research and academic support to young Ph.D. candidates in biomedical and health sciences. Furthermore, he has contributed to academic leadership at GSTU as an Assistant Proctor (2018–2019) and as a Member of the Teachers’ Association (2018–2019), supporting student development and faculty welfare.
